Guided tour:

Nuklear Bunker in main railway station

Civil defense since World War II

After the end of the Second World War and the dropping of two atomic bombs on Japan, the nuclear arms race was to become a defining feature of the Cold War. How was the population to be protected from this threat? The building of nuclear bunkers was one of the solutions. The nuclear bunker under the main train station of Nuremberg is one such facility. It was intended to protect some of the city’s inhabitants, as well as primarily travellers, from an acute threat. The bunker was also designed to shield against biological and chemical attacks.

During the tour of the nuclear bunker under the main train station, you will see the facilities and technical installations that in an emergency were to ensure the survival of some 2,300 people.

Special emphasis is placed on the development of civilian protection since the end of the Second World War. The nature of the new threat, especially the risk of nuclear warfare, led to a rethinking of how to protect the civilian population. Numerous exhibits illustrate the means that were envisaged to confront the dangers.

How can we imagine the destructive force of nuclear weapons? How powerful were the first atomic bombs compared to modern nuclear warheads. A computer simulation gives you an idea of the ominous development of the nuclear weapons arsenal.

Experience what life would have been like in the bunker. Lie down on a pallet or take a seat as you imagine how you would have felt here cooped up with several hundred people.

Join us in discovering one of the most modern bunkers of its time and experience the past in a historical location.

Directions

The nuclear bunker is located in Nuremberg Central Station, directly under the main hall (also called the “middle hall”) at the level of the shopping arcade (Königstorpassage). Please allow some time to find the meeting point in time.

Are you coming by train?
Make your way from the platform into the main hall of the station. From there, four escalators lead to the basement floors. Use the long escalator down or the short escalator down followed by a step staircase. Immediately at the foot of the escalator, turn sharply to the right to find the entrance to the nuclear bunker on the right wall. Wait there for the tour to begin (directly at the Yorma’s restaurant).

Are you coming by subway?
Leave the subway platform up into the shopping arcade (Königstorpassage) and follow the signs to the railway. This takes you to four escalators, which lead up to the main hall of the station. Do not use the escalators, because you can already see the entrance to the nuclear bunker to the left of the escalators. Wait there for the tour to begin (directly at the Yorma’s restaurant).

Are you from the city center?
Walk down Königstraße in the direction of the main train station. At the large, round tower of the city wall (Frauentorturm) the walkway leads down into the shopping arcade (Königstorpassage). Follow the corridor past the advertising showcases into the central area of the passage. The access to the railway and the station mission are signposted. This takes you to four escalators, which lead up to the main hall of the station. Do not use the escalators, because you can already see the entrance to the nuclear bunker to the left of the escalators. Wait there for the tour to begin (directly at the Yorma’s restaurant).

Are you coming by car?
The parking situation in Nuremberg city center and on the Altstadtring is regularly very tense. You will find a few parking spaces at Frauentorgraben, coming from Plärrer, before you reach the main train station. Book enough time at the parking meters. You will need at least two hours to get to and from the tour and the tour itself.
The shortest route to the nuclear bunker and independence from expiring parking meters can be achieved by using the parking garage directly at the train station, entrance after the main portal and in front of the high-rise building “The Cloud One Hotel”. But expect high parking fees.
Vom Parkhaus folgen Sie der Beschilderung zum Infopoint der Deutschen Bahn. Wichtiger Tipp: merken Sie sich den schmalen Durchgang vom Parkhaus zum Bahnhof für Ihren Rückweg.
You can find the Deutsche Bahn info point in the main hall of the station. From there, four escalators lead to the basement floors. Use the long escalator down to the shopping arcade (Königstorpassage) or the short escalator followed by a step staircase. Immediately at the foot of the (escalator) stairs, turn sharply to the right in order to see the entrance to the nuclear bunker on the right wall. Wait there for the tour to begin (directly at the Yorma’s restaurant).

Are you already standing in front of the main portal of the train station?
Enter the station through the main portal and reach the main hall. Another orientation option
The Bahnhofsmission is signposted throughout the station area. If you follow the signs and stand in front of the train station mission, then if you look to the left you will see the Yorma’s restaurant. Head there and you will find the entrance to the nuclear bunker right next to it.
